Ingredient's Bio Activity

SHEA BUTTER (Butyrospermum Parkii Butter)

ABOUT THE INGREDIENT

Shea butter is extracted from the kernels of the shea tree (Vitellaria paradoxa). Shea butter is a fat derivation of Butyrospermum parkii.

ACTIVE COMPONENTS

Rich in triglycerides with oleic, stearic, linoleic, and palmitic fatty acids, as well as unsaponifiable compounds (triterpenes, tocopherol, phenols, and sterols).

BENEFITS IN COSMETICS

MOISTURIZING PROPERTIES

Shea Butter is an emollient. It improves the barrier function by restoring hydration at the stratum corneum and reducing trans-epidermal water loss TEWL.

ANTI-INFLAMMATORY PROPERTIES

Shea Butter has anti-inflammatory properties due to the presence of a high percentage of the unsaponifiable fraction. In lipopolysaccharide-activated macrophage cells, shea butter exhibited anti-inflammatory effects through inhibition of iNOS, COX-2, and cytokines via the NF-κB pathway.

ANTIOXIDANT PROPERTIES

The high percentage of the unsaponifiable fraction in shea butter exerts the antioxidant property. It protects the skin from inflammation and oxidative stress by scavenging free radicals.

SAFETY

Shea Butter is safe to be used in cosmetic practice based on the concentration specified in this safety assessment.
