Eucalyptus is one of the world's important and most widely planted genera. Eucalyptus species are well known as medicinal plants because of their biological and pharmacological properties. In the international pharmacopeia, the most important and represented species is Eucalyptus globulus (E. globulus) which is the main furnisher of essential oils.
Rich in 1,8-cineol α-pinene and γ-terpinene.
ANTIMICROBIAL PROPERTIES
The antimicrobial properties of Eucalyptus oil are determined by agar diffusion and microdilution methods
Antibacterial: It has antimicrobial properties against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria including P. acne, S. aureus, E. coli.
Antiviral: It has antiviral properties against Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV).
Antifungal: It has antifungal properties against Candida species especially Candida albican.
DECREASE SEBUM PRODUCTION
Eucalyptus oil decreases sebum production by reducing the size of sebaceous glands, thus controlling the spread of acne.
ANALGESIC AND ANTI-INFLAMMATORY PROPERTIES
Eucalyptus oil has central and peripheral analgesic effects as well as neutrophil-dependent and independent anti-inflammatory activities. Therefore, it suppresses edema, neutrophil migration and vascular permeability.
Eucalyptus Oil is safe to be used in cosmetics practice and the concentration described in this safety assessment when formulated to be non-sensitizing.
