Pearl is one of the well-known Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). It’s commonly used for beauty treatment and other ailments.
Rich in abundant protein and essential mineral content.
Pearl contains mainly calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate, which accounted for 91%, followed by silica, calcium phosphate, aluminum oxide and ferric oxide as well as some trace elements such as sodium, magnesium, manganese, selenium, aluminum, and copper.
ANTIOXIDANT PROPERTIES
Natural antioxidants could react with free radicals and thus protect from age-related degenerative diseases. Pearl powder is a powerful antioxidant. The abundance of protein in pearl powder imparted its overall antioxidant activity. It can enhance the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), one of the body’s premier antioxidant enzymes, and also reduce peroxidation, one of the major aging processes of the body.
The Aspartate (Asp) and Glutamate (Glu) amino acids present in the pearl powder possess antioxidant properties that could boost up the immune system. In addition, Valine (Val), Isoleucine (Ile), Leucine (Leu), Methionine (Met), Phenylalanine (Phe), Tryptophan (Trp), and Cysteine (Cys) belonging to hydrophobic amino acids were also reported to exhibit better free radical quenching ability, further enhancing the antioxidant properties of pearl powder. Furthermore, the presence of trace elements (calcium, magnesium, selenium) in pearl powder also favors antioxidant activity, by acting as cofactors to antioxidant enzymes. Free radical-scavenging is one of the known mechanisms by which antioxidants mitigate lipid peroxidation.
WOUND HEALING PROPERTIES
There are active components in pearl powder that are beneficial for skin cell regeneration and therefore valuable for wound healing. Pearl Powder can boost wound healing by promoting fibroblast migration and stimulating the mRNA expression of collagen type III in fibroblasts.
ANTI-AGING PROPERTIES
Peal powder can increase skin regeneration; thus, help improve skin tone and promote youthful looking skin.
Peal powder exerts its anti-aging properties through different mechanisms. It enhances the regeneration of fibroblasts. It enhances the fibroblasts’ synthesis of the extracellular matrix. It increased the production of components that help cells stick together (which reinforces the barrier function of the skin) and their cellular communication with each other. Moreover, it also helped collagen − the main structural protein in the skin − regenerate itself.
ANTI-INFLAMMATORY PROPERTIES
Pearl Powder has anti-inflammatory properties due to the magnesium it possesses. It enhances the anti-inflammatory function in human keratinocyte (HaCaT) cells exposed to low-dose ultraviolet B (UVB), suggesting that pearl extract could be capable of preventing radiation dermatitis in keratinocytes. The commercial pearl extract has the potential to inhibit radiation dermatitis occurring within keratinocyte cells.
